As a standalone episode, ‘East’ was solid without being truly spectacular, but considering its entire purpose was to set up a breathtaking finale, it got the job done, placing characters in perilous situations and dropping some huge hints about the future of the show.
There were some moments hidden in plain sight, there were more references to the incoming Negan and his weapon of choice, while the most exciting snippet you may have missed was a true ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ reference to the comic books. It could be enormous for the future of the show.
The ‘larger world’ theme has been fantastic throughout Season 6B, and the map looks set to grow even further, but how much of it will fans get to see in the sensational season finale? Here’s everything you may have missed the first time around.
7. Carol Stitching The Gun
When Carol’s opponents looked all set to scoop her up, and a burst of automatic gunfire appeared to save the day, most fans would’ve been expecting to see Rick, maybe Daryl, possibly even Rosita behind the trigger but no, the answer was right there on the screen all along. Carol.
How could she produce such firepower without any visible sign of a weapon on her person? Well, there were the rips in her thick coat, where she used a concealed gun to get out of the sticky situation, but you already knew that from the first Carol scene of Episode 15, right? Or did you?
She’s quite clearly seen stitching up the inner-lining of her coat, proving that Carol plans ahead and importantly, while she still feels major guilt about taking a life, the one-time mother is still prepared for any eventuality, and if that means killing to stay alive, she’s willing to go there.
6. The Car Is Carol
The Walking Dead enjoys a good metaphor every so often, drawing direct comparisons between characters, situations, locations and anything it deems worthy of adding some deeper meaning to. Episode 15 painted the perfect picture of Carol in the form of a vehicle.
Carol flees Alexandria using one of the reinforced cars from the perimeter of the community, and it couldn’t be a more perfect mode of transport. On the surface, it’s an average, everyday, family-style, pleasant car, but the new world has meant it is bristling with spikes, spears, and sharp forms of both attack and defence.
How closely does that follow Carol’s character? She was a mother, an average, everyday, family-led, pleasant mother, but the new world has meant she’s bristling with a spiky attitude, lethal weapons, and a sharp mind to attack others and protect her own people.
5. Rick's Regret?
Morgan: “I’m not right. There is no right. There’s just the wrong that doesn’t pull you down.” Rick: “Hasn’t pulled me down.” Morgan: “I think it will. Because I know you.” The pair’s scenes were fantastic throughout ‘East’, but this one pointed towards a possible future change for Rick’s character.
Their approaches to killing are polar opposites, but as we’ve seen with Carol, the guilt can overcome anyone. Morgan’s predicting Rick could be the man to suffer from this at some point in the near future.
There’s also the fact that Morgan may be under severe threat going into the Season 6 finale. In the event of Morgan dying, Rick could want to honour his fallen friend and FINALLY realise that a bullet to the brain isn’t always the best way of going about life. It was a small detail, one you could easily miss, but Morgan may have just told us where Rick is heading.
4. Maggie's Bruises
It’s tough to say it, but Maggie’s storyline simply can’t end well in Season 6. There could be three possibilities, with one or more almost sure to come true in the next episode. 1. Maggie dies. 2. Glenn dies. 3. Maggie’s baby dies.
That’s such a grim, grim assessment of the situation, but it would be a genuine shock if none of those events come true, with Negan on the way, and Maggie left in crippling pain long before she’s due to give birth. It’s just not going to end well, right?
One brief moment, coming from Glenn and Maggie’s shower scene, also hinted at potential doom for the unborn baby, with Maggie bruised around her back and side. If the baby really has taken a knock, it could be a horrible end to a potentially beautiful story.
3. No Goodbye For Maggie
If you still don’t believe that Glenn, Maggie or the baby are in trouble, then try explaining this scene, right here. The shower scene is ‘possibly’ the last moment of happiness we see between the pair on the show, with both characters in serious trouble in very different locations.
Maggie watched as Glenn burst away in search of Daryl, and there was a very deliberate lingering shot of the shocked Maggie, left standing at the gates. She has some strong characters nearby, but they’re not Glenn, and they’re not doctors.
If something awful happens to either of those three potential death candidates (Maggie, Glenn, baby) it’s going to be a horrific realisation for those left alive. Have we just seen Maggie and Glenn’s final moment?
2. The Bat
If you haven’t been picking up on the numerous bat references littered throughout Season 6, you should probably re-watch the second half again to refresh your memory. Remember the bat, because after the finale, the likelihood is that you’ll be struggling to forget it.
Here we saw Carl picking up a weapon confiscated by the Saviours, and that’s almost certainly their mark etched ominously into the side of the grip.
If you’ve seen the trailer for the upcoming finale, you’ll have caught your first glimpse of the biggest, baddest threat to the group in the history of the show. But most hauntingly of all, you’ll have seen the weapon he’s bringing along to the party. A barbed wire-wrapped bat.
1. Man In Armour
It’s one of those storylines that could lead somewhere, but it could easily fade away into nothing. Morgan let a man live. That shouldn’t be a big deal, but in a world where Rick will quickly blow the head off anyone who dares cross him, sparing a man is huge.
There was something interesting about this particular escapee. Note his clothing. It looks a lot like he’s wearing some form of armour. Not only does that suggest he’s with a group, but it’s hinting at a whole new part of the ‘larger world’.
He’s not a Saviour, he’s not one of Rick’s, he ‘might’ be from the Hilltop but what would he be doing out there? Are we about to be introduced to a whole new set of characters once again, and will we ever find out what the armoured man was doing at the barn?
The comic book character on the left is part of an entirely new group called the Kingdom, so without spoiling any of those potential storylines, do you think there’s a chance they may be coming soon?
